Free Motion Embroidery Basics
With Dorothy Raymond
This hands-on class will explore basic Free Motion Embroidery techniques used to create and embellish quilts and garments.
Students will use different textures and colors of fabric, appliquéd using free motion techniques, and thread painting to create depth.
The morning will give students a chance to learn basic free motion techniques. The afternoon will cover how to convert a landscape photograph or drawing into a textile appliqué landscape.
Sewing machine with darning foot (or free motion embroidery foot) required.
Kit Fee $10
Kit will include two pieces of interfacing and muslin to serve as a foundation for the embroidery; and one spool of decorative thread to take home. Students will also be able to use upholstery fabric samples from TACtile’s stash and a selection of decorative threads provided by the teacher.
Note: decorative threads are expensive.

Creating Fabulous Paper

We will create a unique fabric that can be used as anything from a quilt, to a background for collage, to a postcard. Combining muslin, glue, papers, paint and creativity will result in a fabric different from any you see in your favorite quilting store.

Nuno Felt Intensive - Making Fabric For A Garment

Laminated felt (aka Nuno Felt) is the fastest growing technique in contemporary feltmaking. Lightweight and gorgeous, it appeals to all of us. The uniqueness of feltmaking allows for endless variations in technique and this especially applies to laminated felt. The possibilities seem infinite and just depend on your preferences. To give participants insight into the possibilities, we will explore a number of techniques for combining fabric and fiber. On the first day, each participant will prepare a sample and discussion will follow allowing each to have a sample that can be placed in a notebook. As a result of their findings, each participant will plan a larger project around one or more of the sample techniques. Materials will be provided by the instructor and the materials fee will be determined by the size of the project. Average materials fee =$40.00.

It’s fun to be “green” and re-cycle; a small investment can bring big rewards. We’ll discuss design options and visualize what styles will look best on your figure. By cutting and manipulating the fabric into tucks, ruffles, shirring draping or adding elastic, coordinating fabric or trims you’ll create something wonderful and totally “you”.

Techniques include bead and sequin embroidery, brick stitch, igolochkoy (Russian needle punch), appliqué, French knots, and other mischiefs. This may be one of the best mediums ever.
